STARS team takes top spot in international air medical competition

REGINA, November 13, 2024 – STARS air medical crew members won first place in two distinct simulation competitions at the Air Medical Transport Conference (AMTC) in Salt Lake City, UT last week.

Representing STARS’ Regina base, flight paramedic, Chris Fay, and flight nurse, Kevin Easton, took part in the Association of Air Medical Services Sim Cup and Clinical Challenge at the conference — two events that had them running six gruelling patient scenarios over a span of three days.

Fay and Easton competed against five teams from across North America to place first in the Sim Cup challenge, and over a dozen teams to win one half of the Clinical Challenge.

“On behalf of our entire organization, we are exceptionally proud to have Chris and Kevin represent STARS on the international stage, and demonstrate first-hand the exceptional quality of care that our medical teams are known for,” said Katherine Emberly, president and CEO, STARS. “Our air medical crews dedicate years of their lives preparing and continuously training in order to be ready for any patient and scenario.”

This marks the second time in three years that Fay and Easton have successfully competed on the AMTC stage – placing first in the Sim Cup challenge both times.

“It’s an honour to represent STARS on a stage like AMTC. It’s a testament to the education and training they provide to us that allows us to give high quality care to our patients,” said Fay.

“We felt extremely well supported from all our colleagues, which allowed us to perform well,” said Easton.

STARS holds an internal Sim Competition where teams of two representing each of the six bases compete each year. The winners of the internal competition go on to compete at AMTC on the international stage. To learn more about this year’s internal Sim competition, please see this video.
