STARS RESCUE IN THE ROCKIES RAISES $450,000 AND COUNTING FOR CRITICAL CARE IN ALBERTA
CALGARY, September 25, 2024 – Five local community business leaders braved the elements on Tuesday to raise an incredible $450,000 and counting for STARS operations in Alberta.
For this year’s Rescue in the Rockies, five participants representing different sectors were airlifted to a remote location west of Calgary with the goal of raising $50,000 each in order to be “rescued” and earn their flight back home. Each competitor took on a series of challenges throughout the day to simulate the intricacies of a STARS mission, and spent time making phone calls to friends, family, colleagues, neighbours and beyond to help reach their fundraising goal. Donations will continue to be collected and added to the final total throughout the week.
“We are exceptionally grateful to each of these intrepid leaders that rose to the challenge and absolutely shattered their fundraising goals to raise over $450,000 in support of STARS,” said Katherine Emberly, president and CEO, STARS. “Their unwavering support, tenacity and determination is a direct reflection of the Alberta community that has continuously rallied behind our mission for the last 40 years, and enabled STARS to continue delivering critical care, anywhere it is needed.”
This year’s participants included Steve Glanville, CEO, STEP Energy Services; Andy Trewick, president & CEO, Graham; Jamie Saunders, SVP operations, CDN Controls; Joel Armstrong, SVP production & operations, Whitecap Resources; and Carolyn Martin, CEO, Sponsor Energy. Each participant was paired with a STARS air medical crew member who supported them throughout the day.
“The vision of CDN’s community investment program is simple: We show up,” said Jamie Saunder, SVP operations, CDN Controls. “The work of STARS and the incredible people who work to deliver their life saving mandate deserve the unwavering support of our community and our industry. I am elated to be part of the 2024 Rescue in the Rockies and to help raise funds for such a worthy cause”
From the readiness challenge to see who could suit up and get buckled into the helicopter the fastest, to the simulated cardiac arrest medical challenge, each task gave participants an inside look into the various components and complexities that make up a STARS mission.
Rescue in the Rockies was the final of three Rescue events hosted by STARS this month, following Rescue on the Prairie in Saskatchewan and Rescue on the River in Manitoba. Combined, the Rescue events raised over $1.3 million to support STARS operations across the three provinces.
