Patient’s original song an emotional tribute to STARS founder and legacy

CALGARY, Nov. 25, 2025 – A heartfelt and deeply personal tribute to STARS and its 40 years of life-saving service is taking flight in the form of music. Local singer-songwriter Jacquie Drew, a former STARS patient, has released an original song celebrating the organization’s founder and decades of impact.

This marks the first time a song about STARS has been released on official channels. The track, ‘If I Could Fly’ will be available to the public on Nov. 26 at stars.ca/jacquiedrew (and on her streaming platforms). Accompanying it are a touching video production behind the making of the song, photos from throughout her journey, and a written story.

“After they rescued me and scraped me out of that ditch, I really wanted to repay them in some way,” says Drew. “I learned of the original story of STARS founder Dr. (Greg) Powell going to Vietnam and seeing people on the battlefield — I just thought, that is an excellent story, and I would just love to be able to capture what he was going through.”

From that, Drew’s song, ‘If I Could Fly,’ a tribute to STARS, was written and produced.

Drew’s connection to STARS is deeply personal. In 2022, during a motorcycle ride in Kananaskis Country, she hit a rock on a dirt road and crashed. In a remote area with no cell service, her husband was able to use his GPS SOS to trigger an emergency response. STARS arrived and transported her, a mission she credits with saving her life. Drew has since made a full recovery.
