For Shelley McDonald, her Manitoba STARS crew members are heroes. Shelley was nearly six months pregnant with her first child when she was in a head-on highway collision on Aug. 26, 2012. Her vehicle was a crumpled mess and Shelley suffered multiple fractures. She was in critical condition when paramedics arrived. With no time to waste, McDonald was taken by ambulance to Minnedosa Health Centre, from where STARS picked her up and flew her to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. Shelley’s injuries were extensive, including multiple fractured vertebrae and temporary vision loss.
Remarkably, Shelley recovered from her injuries and she and her husband Dale welcomed baby Corbin to their family four months later. The family is grateful that STARS is there for Manitobans. “If it hadn’t been for the STARS team, I’m not sure I would have walked away from the accident and celebrated the arrival of our first child just months later,” said Shelley. “I don’t know what many families, including mine, would do without this charitable service.”
