A crash between a truck and a hay wagon on a dusty road left Ryland McCall losing blood and fighting for his life.
When STARS arrived on scene it was clear that Ryland needed a blood transfusion to save his life.
“He was cut up pretty bad, and STARS has blood on board. As soon as they got there, they pumped it into him. I would say that’s what helped him along with his healing,” says Ryland’s dad, Kelly.
From being injured in the hospital with cuts and a broken pelvis to playing hockey two months later, Ryland made an exceptional recovery.
It’s for incidents like Ryland’s that STARS developed the Blood on Board program. As flight nurse, Denise Treleaven says, “I’m really thankful that we have this resource available to us. It definitely saves lives.”
