Owen Ashworth had launched himself on his dirt bike from ditch to ditch across the road at his family’s rural home in Oungre, SK. countless times. On Aug. 6, 2013 Owen took a break from combining to play around on his bike. This time, when he performed the move along the grid road, he took a hard landing on his head, which wasn’t protected by a helmet. “I was told my brain shook forward and back and the connections were damaged,” said Owen. “I was in really rough shape.” Once paramedics arrived and assessed an unconscious Owen, they knew he had to get to hospital quickly, so STARS was requested and the teen was airlifted to Regina for critical care. He recovered in Regina General Hospital for a month, slowly emerging from a coma after nearly a week. Since, Owen has recovered well and is expected to graduate high school this spring. In addition to volunteering for STARS whenever he gets the chance, Owen shares this safety message: “I encourage everyone to wear a helmet,” he said. “I was lucky STARS was there for me.”
