Horseback riding is one of my greatest loves.
From the first time I mounted a pony at age three to today, riding is when I am most at peace.
It’s also the only time I was so severely injured I thought I might die.
After an unfamiliar horse fell backward and slammed down on me, my first concern was my remote location. As my leg swelled from the blood pooling inside, the pain was more than I could bear.
I was in the middle of nowhere, far from a hospital and I was scared.
The only reason I am alive is because STARS landed on the field where I was injured and carried me to hospital in time for the critical care I required. Inside the helicopter the crew members that cared for me were skilled, knowledgeable and compassionate. I knew right away that I was in the best hands possible.
Getting back on horses and working with such amazing creatures was a top priority for me.
When you are given a second chance you have to embrace it.
