Brad Konkin can’t remember the details of the accident that caused him to be transported by STARS back in 2001 to the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, but when he heard that STARS was flying in Manitoba, he stopped by the Winnipeg base to express his gratitude.
Now a Winnipeg resident, Brad discussed his accident in which he was travelling with two friends through Fish Creek Park in Calgary. The vehicle veered to the right and rolled, with all three of the occupants suffering critical injuries.
Brad said he was extricated out of his vehicle with the assistance of the fire department’s Jaws of Life after being trapped under the passenger side dash, with his legs over the console. Medical personnel at the scene gave him little chance for survival, and Brad credits STARS for saving his life.
He was in a coma for three days and suffered a brain injury and a broken femur. He spent almost four months in hospital, with much of that time focusing on restoring his scattered memories.
“To this day, I don’t recall much of my past but am forever grateful that STARS was able to come to my rescue,” said Brad, who is now pleased that the organization will be providing the same life-saving services to residents of Manitoba.
