STARS Virtual Care Requirements

Interested in using STARS Virtual Care in your organization?

STARS is excited to be using Virtual Care (VC) to better reach our patients and support our operations. STARS VC may also be the right tool for you.

Currently, STARS VC is being used to assist in triaging interfacility missions, support our partners during resuscitation or critical interventions, and help prepare receiving rural facilities for unexpected critical patients. This service allows us to connect our Air Medical Crews and Transport Physicians to any medical provider with a cellular phone.

On initiation of a Virtual Care request, our in-house STARS Emergency Link Center (ELC) uses the internationally proven GoodSAM platform to transmit a platform agnostic web link via text message (SMS) or email to the caller. Clinking the link turns the caller’s mobile phone into a secure “webcam”, and the video feed is then securely passed to the STARS Transport Physician and any other specialists as required. The GoodSAM service meets Canadian health privacy standards and is widely used internationally in austere environments with limited cellular data availability.

Technical Requirements

You must have the following:

• Internet connection (WiFi or cellular). The faster and more reliable, the better.
• A device/devices with the ability to receive text messages or email.
• A device/devices with a camera, microphone, and speaker.
• Device access to a web browser.
• Ability for your organization IT department to whitelist goodsam.org.
