July 23, 2010 -- Mayor Dave Bronconnier will be presented with a Red Ring for Life (RRFL) by STARS flight paramedic Mike Lamacchia, on the north side of council chambers at 9:15 a.m., Monday July 26, in recognition of The City of Calgary’s 25 years of life saving work with STARS.
The photo opportunity will be followed by an official presentation of a RRFL to The City of Calgary in council chambers at 9:30 a.m.. The ceremony recognizes The City’s support, through its services, provided on behalf of Calgarians, which assist in STARS’ ability to serve the community. Since STARS began operating in 1985, the City’s Protective Services, and individual emergency responders, have contributed to many life saving missions.
Many missions have involved Calgarians as both patients and emergency service providers. Thanks to the City’s cooperation, Calgarians can continue relying on STARS, while traveling on our highways, working outside the city, and when needed within the city limits.
The goal of the RRFL fundraising program is to engage donors, patients and members of the public, including the City of Calgary, in STARS life saving mission. The rings are a symbol of survival, courage, recovery, and the many hands involved in the chain of survival.
Background
- The RRFL program is part of STARS 25 year anniversary celebrations this year, with a goal of having 20,000 people wearing the rings; which is approximately the same number of missions flown by STARS since 1985.
- Research shows that one in 10 Albertans have been flown by STARS, or know someone flown by STARS. The Red Ring for Life program builds on that connectivity by providing individuals a unique opportunity to share their story.
- The rings are a symbol of survival, courage and recovery. The rings are also meant to symbolize the many hands involved in a life saving mission, a sense of community, and the continuation of support from one generation to the next, as STARS looks toward another 25 years of care in the air.
- A Red Ring for Life public service announcement video is on the STARS Facebook page at www.facebook.com/starsairambulance, and the Red Ring for Life website at www.redringforlife.ca. The website features information about the program, a sign-up area and a printable ring sizer. The rings can be purchased with a minimum commitment of $5 per month, or a minimum donation of $60.
- Those wearing the rings will have an opportunity to join together in public celebration events being planned for October 2, 2010, at each of Alberta’s three bases in Calgary, Edmonton and Grande Prairie. The events will be open to the general public in recognition of 25 years of generous support. The celebration events will primarily be promoted through social media, including STARS official Facebook page, which has more than 2,000 members.
